    Spectrum of Discipline

    It is not true that we are either disciplined or not. Most of us share a degree of discipline. However, occasionally we strive for greater degrees of discipline than our comfort zone allows. There are times that if we find the challenge too much for us, that we allow ourselves to conclude that the situation or circumstances are beyond our control. As you are discovering, if discipline was easy, we’d all do it. But it’s not.

Evidence shows that it was most likely influenced by the Greek virtue of Arete. It may be translated variously as weight, seriousness, dignity, and importance and connotes a certain substance or depth of personality. It also conveys a sense of responsibility and commitment to the task. In the British education system, gravitas was seen as one of the pillars of the moral formation of the English gentleman during the Victorian and Edwardian eras.     My dad appeared confident at least on the outside. My mom seemed comparatively more insecure. However, appearances are often misleading.
